            I have learned so much from taking this Health and Special Education class. For example, I never knew how much trauma really affected students not just outside the classroom, but inside the classroom as well. I think that it is extremely important to try and get to know students and the role their home life plays due to this particular fact. The last thing a teacher wants is for her/his student to be suffering with trauma at home, but for them to be as accommodated as possible. Certain strategies that could help with trauma students would be like peace centers. A peace center could consist of a little area in the classroom where there would be a seating area, books, a meditation corner, etc. That way when the students are feeling overwhelmed they have an area where they could clear their heads and recoup. When first beginning this class, I had thought that we were to learn the basics such as hygiene, sexual abuse, special education students, and so on. However, I have been learning so much more. One perfect example was the process we have to go through when being a mandated reporter. I learned that as a mandated reporter, we don’t need the permission of our superior to report what we think is a red flag with our students. Something else I have become familiar with are all the resources there are for teachers regarding special education and health. I think it’s super helpful that we had to provide websites for our discussion post because we can use them for the future. It is perfect preparation for our future students and will benefit us in the long run.
